Approximately 200 participants, dressed in red, took part in a 5,000km run held to honor the memory of Henry Nowak, a devoted Arsenal football fan. The event was organized by Mary McLoughlin, who is 65 years old and a member of the Chafford Hundred Running Club. Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old from Chafford Hundred, Essex, tragically lost his life after being stabbed while walking home following an evening out in Southampton on December 3rd. In June, Vickrum Digwa was sentenced to life imprisonment for Henry’s murder, with a minimum term of 21 years.
Mary McLoughlin spoke about the impact Henry’s death had on the community, describing him as “a lovable boy.” She credited Sylvia Merrigan with helping to organize the run, which brought together people from diverse backgrounds and faiths. McLoughlin emphasized the event’s aim to support Henry’s family, stating, “I thought it would be a nice thing to support the family to show them that they are in our thoughts and prayers.” The event received considerable local support, with Morrisons—where Henry once worked—donating water and snacks. Members of the local Sikh community also contributed by providing water, naan bread, and onion bhajis. Additionally, a local church offered its facilities and served refreshments such as toast, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate.
The gathering was described as both moving and uplifting. “People were pleased to be there to show their support to the family and I think the family were grateful that we were there to show support to them,” said McLoughlin. The event raised over £600 for 2wish, a charity dedicated to helping families affected by the sudden loss of young people. The run drew a crowd of about 200 attendees, including Thurrock’s Member of Parliament, Jen Craft, who praised the occasion. Craft said, “It was really lovely, it showed Thurrock at its best,” and highlighted the warmth and unity demonstrated by the community.
During the opening of the event, Henry’s mother, Lucy Ross, spoke emotionally, acknowledging the importance of such gatherings by saying, “It’s days like this that help the family keep going.” Craft also noted that many of Henry’s school friends attended and shared stories about him, reflecting on his life and character. The run proved to be a heartfelt tribute, showcasing the strength and compassion of the community in the face of tragedy
