An 11-year-old girl named Shannon was rescued after her leg became trapped between large granite rocks during a school trip on Dartmoor, Devon. The rescue operation took place at Hound Tor, where emergency teams, including the Dartmoor Search and Rescue and Devon Cave Rescue Organisation (DCRO), were called in to assist. Remarkably, a bottle of washing up liquid played a crucial role in freeing Shannon from the rocks.
Olly Rees, the leader of the cave rescue team, explained that on his way to the scene, he stopped at a garage to buy a bottle of Fairy washing up liquid. He used it as a lubricant to help slide Shannon’s leg out of the tight gap in the rocks, noting, “it made all the difference.” Shannon had been stuck for over four hours, and the rescue team’s specialist equipment and skills in navigating narrow spaces were also vital, but the washing up liquid was a key element in the successful rescue.
Shannon described how the accident happened while rock scrambling with her group. Her foot slipped into a hole, causing her to become trapped, and she was unsure if she would be freed. She recalled the moment the rescuers applied the washing up liquid: “They put some on the hands, then got it all over my leggings… Then they put some in where I was stuck, and then they were able to slide me out.” Her mother, Jessica, expressed her gratitude toward everyone who helped, saying, “She came out happy, she came out smiling… I just cannot ever thank you enough.”
Following the rescue, the team sent Shannon home with the signed bottle of washing up liquid that had been instrumental in her rescue. Olly Rees mentioned that other emergency teams present, including fire crews, Devon Doctors, and the air ambulance, were impressed by the effectiveness of the washing up liquid and planned to keep some for future incidents. The DCRO remarked on the event as a “fantastic example of multi-agency cooperation” and called the bottle of Fairy liquid “the real hero of the day.
