Van driver gives lift to armed officer chasing suspect in Margate

A van driver has been praised for his prompt and courageous assistance in helping an armed police officer apprehend a suspect fleeing in Kent. The incident occurred on 16 June, with body-worn camera footage revealing the crucial moment when the driver pulled over to offer support during the chase. Kent Police reported that the suspect, who initially managed to evade arrest, had run towards Tivoli Road in Margate before the van driver intervened.

As the van came to a halt, the motorist invited the officer inside by saying, “Get in the back.” With the sliding door still open, the officer encouraged the driver, shouting, “Go, go, go! Cheers buddy. Follow that police officer.” The driver then sped off, following the fleeing suspect’s direction, while the officer continued providing instructions. Eventually, the van overtook both the suspect and an officer pursuing on foot, at which point it pulled over.

The armed officer immediately exited the vehicle, drew his weapon, and successfully arrested the suspect. The driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, had witnessed armed police struggling to keep pace with the individual who had fled after an assault on High Street. When thanked by the officer after the arrest, the van driver responded, “I am just glad I could be of service. That was quite exhilarating.”

Kent Police Superintendent Will Lay expressed deep appreciation for the driver’s actions, stating, “Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of this responsible and public-spirited driver, officers were able to apprehend the dangerous individual. The successful arrest may not have been possible without the member of the public and his vehicle. He should feel proud of his contribution to keeping his community safe and we are truly grateful for his assistance.
