A tragic incident occurred when a car was struck by a train at a level crossing on Station Road in Hoghton, near Preston, Lancashire. The collision took place around 8:50 AM BST, according to British Transport Police (BTP). Emergency services rushed to the scene following the accident, which resulted in the death of one occupant in the vehicle and left a child with life-threatening injuries, currently receiving treatment at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
Despite the severity of the collision, no passengers or staff on the train required medical attention, BTP confirmed. The North West Ambulance Service deployed multiple clinical teams to the location, including the hazardous area response team and two air ambulances. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Services responded with four fire engines and specialist equipment, urging the public to avoid the area while they managed the situation.
Northern Trains advised passengers that services passing through Preston and Blackburn had been cancelled as a result of the incident. They urged travelers to check for updated information prior to traveling. A spokesman from British Transport Police revealed that two individuals had been in the car involved; one was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other is hospitalized with critical injuries. Authorities are continuing to investigate the full circumstances of the event and have requested anyone who witnessed it to come forward with information.
Tricia Williams, managing director of Northern, confirmed that the 7:51 AM Colne to Preston train was the one involved in the collision. She expressed condolences for the person who lost their life as well as support for the injured.
