Two local men who were among the first to arrive at the scene of a recent bus accident recounted the distressing circumstances, describing passengers as “crying and screaming” as bystanders rushed to assist. Martyn Pope and Dean Hollands explained that adrenaline took over as they sprang into action, utilizing tools from their van to break a window and force open the bus doors.
The incident involved the X11 bus service, which crashed on the A484 near the Kidwelly roundabout in Carmarthenshire on a Tuesday afternoon. Nineteen individuals sustained injuries, with six requiring hospital treatment. Authorities confirmed that none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. Pope and Hollands, both local care home workers, were traveling just behind the bus when they noticed it had veered off into a field.
“When we saw the bus from the top it was rolled over and there’s no seat belts on buses so people would have been thrown all over the place,” Pope said. The men described a significant drop of 15-20 feet from the road down into the field. Given the heat at the time, emergency crews brought large quantities of water to those affected.
One of the injured passengers was 17-year-old Connor, who was traveling to meet friends in Swansea. His mother, Sally-Ann Morgan Smith, received a call from him shortly after the crash. She described the anxious journey to reach him, saying, “He might be 17, but he’s still my baby.” Connor was treated at Glangwili Hospital with a high pulse but was reported to be okay despite injuries including a bad knee, a damaged arm, and general soreness. Morgan Smith expressed gratitude toward the strangers who helped at the scene, recounting how an elderly woman was given Connor’s own drink when water ran out. She also praised her son for quickly activating the emergency exit after the accident
