UK weather: Extreme heat warning extended to four days as 38C heatwave approaches

The Met Office has extended its amber weather warning for extreme heat, anticipating temperatures could soar as high as 38°C (100°F) across certain parts of England later next week. This updated alert will be effective from 1:00 AM BST on Monday until 11:59 PM BST on Thursday, reflecting increased certainty that exceptionally hot and humid weather conditions will persist through the middle of the week.

The warning covers extensive areas of England and Wales, with northern regions being included only on Wednesday and Thursday. This advisory indicates a high likelihood of widespread impacts on the population, including significant health risks, potential disruption to everyday activities, and additional strain on infrastructure systems.

Forecasts predict daytime temperatures will surpass 30°C (86°F) over much of the affected region, with the hottest places possibly seeing highs near 38°C (100°F). In addition to the daytime heat, nighttime temperatures are expected to remain unusually warm, especially in urban areas, where lows might struggle to fall below 20 or 21°C (68-70°F), leading to what are termed tropical nights.

The current heatwave is moving in from continental Europe, where an intense hot spell is ongoing. In western France, temperatures could reach around 43 or 44°C (109-111°F) in the coming days. Meanwhile, Paris is projected to experience a temperature of 40°C (104°F), a level that would be unprecedented for the month of June
