A woman tragically lost her life while attempting to cross the English Channel aboard a small boat headed to the UK. She was discovered unresponsive after the vessel entered UK waters on Saturday and, despite medical intervention, she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Home Office.
Kent Police responded to the incident at the Western Docks in Dover around 15:10 BST, where the woman was officially declared deceased. The government expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “This latest tragedy underlines the terrible dangers of small boat crossings. We continue to work relentlessly with the French and our partners overseas to prevent these perilous journeys.”
The Home Office extended its sympathies to all those affected by this sorrowful event. At that time, the number of migrants who had successfully crossed the Channel this year reached 9,852, representing a 40% decrease when compared with the same period in 2025. Since Monday, at least 798 people had made the crossing on 11 different small boats.
Efforts to reduce these crossings have been intensified. In April, the UK and France announced a new £662 million agreement aimed at halting migrants from making the dangerous journey. This landmark deal includes increased enforcement actions on beaches and aims to bring people smugglers to justice. Measures involve the French authorities deploying drones worth millions of pounds, two helicopters, a sophisticated camera system, and riot-trained police officers to patrol the beaches, all designed to intercept illegal migrants and dismantle smuggling operations
