Daisy Hill Hospital suspends maternity services due to staff shortages

Maternity services at Daisy Hill Hospital have been temporarily halted due to a shortage of staff. The Southern Health Trust attributed this disruption to “unexpected sickness,” which left them unable to maintain safe medical coverage in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Newry location over the weekend.

This suspension began on Friday evening and is scheduled to continue until 09:00 BST on Monday. During this interval, all obstetric and gynecological care will be shifted to Craigavon Area Hospital. A limited number of maternity patients currently at Daisy Hill will also be moved to Craigavon to ensure uninterrupted care.

The Southern Trust emphasized that this decision prioritizes the safety of both mothers and their babies. They expressed regret for any worry or inconvenience this may cause and noted that the temporary relocation is part of their protocols for maintaining service continuity when staffing pressures arise.

Ongoing challenges with medical staffing in obstetrics and gynecology at Daisy Hill were acknowledged by the trust. Women seeking advice during this period have been directed to contact the Maternity Assessment Unit at Craigavon Area Hospital, and the trust confirmed that the situation will continue to be closely monitored
