Boy, 3, was attacked by crocodile at zoo as man bailed

A three-year-old boy suffered critical injuries after being attacked by a crocodile at a zoo near Huntingdon, police have confirmed. The incident took place at Johnsons of Old Hurst, where the boy somehow ended up inside the crocodile enclosure. Emergency services were called to the scene on Thursday afternoon, and the young child was quickly pulled out of the enclosure by zoo staff before receiving medical treatment at the location. He was subsequently taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and remains in a critical but stable condition.

Cambridgeshire Police stated that a 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the attack. However, he has since been released on bail as he is currently deemed unfit for interview. Officers continue to investigate how long the boy was inside the enclosure and have been speaking to witnesses who were present at the zoo during the incident. The crocodiles involved in the attack have neither been seized nor euthanised, according to the police.

The crocodiles are housed in a converted cattle barn that features metal-fenced elevated walkways overlooking large pools surrounded by tropical plants. Following the incident, Johnsons of Old Hurst temporarily closed the Tropical House section, which contains the crocodile enclosure, as a mark of respect for the boy and his family. Staff were seen arriving at the site earlier on the day of the attack, and the rest of the zoo remained open as usual.

Visitors to the zoo described the enclosure as having “quite high fences” with steel mesh fencing around the viewing platform. One witness, who did not see the attack but heard screams, noted the rapid response of zoo staff and an air ambulance team. Magpas Air Ambulance confirmed that a critical care team treated the boy at the scene before taking him to hospital. Local MP Ben Obese-Jecty urged the public to avoid speculation online, emphasizing that police are treating the event as a critical incident and continuing their inquiries
