Anthony Canty, who won the EuroMillions jackpot in May 2020, tragically passed away after sustaining a severe brain injury in a collision while cycling. The 39-year-old from Tiptree was involved in a suspected hit-and-run incident on the morning of 21 May. He was struck by a car as he rode his bicycle along Maldon Road, near the junction with Braxted Park Road and Grove Park Road, heading towards Great Totham.

After the collision, emergency services rushed Canty to the Royal London Hospital, where he was treated for four days before being declared deceased on 25 May at 18:11.
During the inquest opened by Area Coroner Michelle Brown in Chelmsford, it was revealed that the provisional cause of death was craniocervical disassociation along with a traumatic brain injury. Brown announced that the inquest would be adjourned for four months to allow detectives to continue their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Canty, a father of two, had gained public attention when he and his partner, Katie Sullivan, won a £1 million EuroMillions prize just days after an act of kindness. The couple, pictured together holding their winning cheque, were known locally not only for their lottery success but also for the community spirit Canty demonstrated. The investigation into the collision remains ongoing, with the driver currently released under investigation as the police gather further evidence
