Archaeologists have identified what appears to be an earlier, simpler predecessor to Stonehenge, located approximately three miles (five kilometers) away from the famous prehistoric site. While only two holes in the ground remain from this older structure, experts believe these once held wooden posts that aligned with the Sun’s positions during the summer and winter solstices.
