Man charged over Golders Green memorial fire

A man has been formally charged following a suspected arson incident targeting a memorial wall located in Golders Green, north London. The individual, Ali Fallahi, 45, from Ilford, stands accused of igniting a fire at the site on Limes Avenue on the night of 27 April. This event prompted an inquiry led by counter-terrorism officials.

Fallahi faces charges of arson and is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. It is reported that he allegedly caused damage to a memorial cabinet associated with the Miga Rally community group, situated beside the wall. The wall itself honors thousands of protesters who lost their lives in a government crackdown in Iran earlier this year. Additionally, a portion of the memorial is dedicated to victims of the 2023 Hamas attack at the Nova music festival in Israel.

The fire started shortly after midnight and was quickly extinguished before it could spread to the memorial wall, according to representatives of the community group. Authorities have confirmed that the accused holds dual citizenship in the United Kingdom and Iran.

Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads counter-terrorism policing in London, emphasized the ongoing efforts to address multiple arson attacks aimed at both the Jewish community and the Iranian diaspora. She stated, “This charge marks another step forward in one of the investigations into the series of arson attacks targeting the Jewish community and Iranian diaspora in London.
