Marking nine years since the Grenfell Tower tragedy has proven to be especially challenging for those affected, as many continue to grapple with the emotional toll and ongoing fight for justice. Damel Carayol, who lost both his cousin Mary Mendy and her daughter Khadija Saye in the fire, shared his reflections ahead of a memorial service held on the anniversary. As a founder of the grassroots campaign group Humanity for Grenfell, Carayol emphasized how the slow dismantling of the tower has deeply impacted the community’s healing process.
Carayol expressed the frustration and exhaustion felt by many, stating, “Something about this year kind of tipped a lot of people over to feeling the stress, the strain, the exhaustion of fighting year after year … when there’s nothing going on it can drain you, and quite a few people are feeling that way.” Nonetheless, his commitment to the cause remains firm, adding, “We will carry on until justice is served.” The annual memorial event was described as a poignant occasion, featuring the lighting of 72 candles to honor each life lost in the disaster, along with readings of their names and hymns such as “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art,” performed by Carayol and the Humanity for Grenfell Gospel Choir.
The Grenfell Tower, a 23-storey residential building, has been undergoing a painstaking dismantling process since September 2025, with demolition proceeding floor by floor. This effort is expected to last two years, and Carayol noted that the slow progress is a significant factor contributing to the emotional strain felt this year. “This ninth year has been particularly difficult… if I’m honest to myself, I’ve found this year quite trying, quite difficult,” he admitted, adding that others who lost loved ones share similar feelings. The gradual removal of the damaged structure has brought back painful memories and underlined the ongoing nature of the tragedy’s aftermath.
The fire that engulfed Grenfell Tower shortly before 1:00 BST on 14 June 2017 began in a fourth-floor kitchen and rapidly spread throughout the building, resulting in 72 deaths.
