A recent report highlights concerns about jet skiers exceeding speed limits by up to four times while carrying children on board. This troubling behavior has been observed in the waters around Conwy harbour, prompting local authorities to take action. Despite efforts to monitor the area with CCTV cameras, some riders have attempted to avoid detection by removing their registration plates, complicating enforcement efforts.
Matt Forbes, Harbour Master at Conwy, emphasized that only a small fraction of jet ski riders are responsible for these dangerous actions, which violate the 10-knot (11.5 mph) speed restriction set for the area. During a recent meeting, Forbes detailed several incidents over the past months where individuals were seen speeding at 30 to 40 knots, often with young children onboard. These incidents primarily occur in the narrow channel between Deganwy and the Beacons.
These issues have arisen shortly after the installation of CCTV cameras aimed at stopping reckless conduct near the Beacons slipway, where speeding had been a persistent problem. Forbes noted that the harbour has clear signage indicating speed limits, including warning signs at the slipway and marina exits, as well as two yellow special marks specifically delineating the restricted zones. Despite these precautions, some riders continue to take risks that endanger themselves and others.
Efforts to capture evidence have been ongoing, with the harbour working alongside CCTV operators to record violations as they occur. Forbes explained that before enforcement actions can be taken, they need proof of a vehicle’s launch and subsequent recovery, a step that has yet to be fully implemented. The removal of registration plates by some riders indicates they are aware of the surveillance measures in place. Following these events, warning signs around the harbour have been enhanced to make the speed limits unmistakably clear. Additionally, recent water patrols conducted over several weekends have reported no further incidents, suggesting improved compliance in the short term
