David Bishop is left devastated after discovering that the crematorium scattered his late father’s ashes without his consent. The 60-year-old had intended to collect John Bishop’s ashes from Gwent Crematorium and take them to Nottinghamshire, where they could be laid to rest alongside his mother. However, two weeks after the funeral, David was informed that the ashes had already been scattered, contrary to his explicit wishes.
John Bishop, aged 89, passed away suddenly following a heart attack at the end of April. After his wife June died in 2020, John moved to a care home in Caerleon to be closer to David as his health declined.

The crematorium reportedly acted on instructions they believed came from the funeral director, Co-op Funeralcare. David described the experience as “dumbstruck,” struggling to comprehend how his father’s final wishes were disregarded and expressing feelings of emptiness and helplessness.
In response, Co-op Funeralcare stated that their records indicated the instructions provided to the crematorium reflected the family’s wishes and expressed sympathy for the distress caused. Newport City Council, responsible for managing the crematorium, has launched an investigation to determine how the error occurred and prevent similar incidents in the future. The council publicly apologized to David and his family for the deeply upsetting situation, while David awaits the outcome of the inquiry, hoping for clarity on what went wrong
