Work to start next month on upgrades to boost safety and accessibility on Wavertree High Street

Starting next month, a series of enhancements on Wavertree High Street and Picton Road will commence, aiming to improve travel along this important route in Liverpool. These works represent the latest stage in a broader initiative funded through more than £2 million from the Liverpool City Region’s Key Route Network Levelling Up Programme. The scheduled improvements will begin on Monday, 6 July.

The appointed contractor, Aureos Highways, is tasked with carrying out the upgrades, which span from the Spofforth Road junction up to the Picton Clock Tower Roundabout. The project is planned to last approximately 26 weeks. Among the key improvements are the complete resurfacing of the carriageway, enhanced pedestrian crossings, and the installation of push-button crossings on all four sections of the junction between Picton Road and Rathbone Road. Additionally, a new vehicle detection system will be introduced to optimize traffic signal timings, aiming to improve lane capacity.

Efforts have been made to limit disruption for local residents, businesses, and commuters during the works. However, a small number of surveys within the initial weeks will require lane closures and the use of temporary traffic lights. The Council will regularly update the public via its social media channels, while any changes to public transport routes will be communicated through the Merseytravel website.

To help familiarize those living and working nearby with the planned improvements, the Council and Aureos will host two information sessions at Liverpool Aquatics Centre within Wavertree Sports Park on Wellington Road. These meetings will allow attendees to meet the project team, examine detailed plans, and ask any questions about the upcoming works. The sessions are scheduled for Tuesday 16 June from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and Tuesday 30 June between 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm. Upon completion, these enhancements will add to a series of road improvements supported by the City Region’s £13.6 million investment designed to enhance the reliability and resilience of key roads throughout Liverpool.

Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, emphasized the priority placed on safety: “The safety of all road users is a priority to us, whether they’re driving, walking or wheeling. This is a particularly busy location, and we know residents have raised concerns about how difficult it can be to cross safely. These upgrades will make a real difference for pedestrians and will help create a safer, more accessible environment for everyone who uses the high street.”
