Several traders have reported significant financial losses after the cancellation of an annual event known locally as “Super Saturday,” which was called off due to high winds. The unforeseen cancellation prevented many from selling their stock, resulting in thousands of pounds in lost revenue.
Among those affected was Bernie Williams of Cornish Cracking Eggs, who estimated her losses to be between £4,000 and £5,000. Similarly, Kate Martin of Treway Farm experienced an even larger deficit, between £10,000 and £15,000, due to the cancellation of the show. Martin had intended to sell not only meat but also burgers and bacon rolls at the event. She expressed deep disappointment over the situation, highlighting both the impact on attendees and the severe financial consequences for businesses. Martin explained, “For us, it’s usually Saturday lunchtime before we start running into any kind of profit… So where we are right now, we’ve not broken even from two days’ trade, it will be £10,000 to £15,000 [deficit]. We’re now into the realms of damage limitation.” To recoup some of the losses, she is attempting to sell her stock through other means, including organizing a burger night.
In an effort to assist traders affected by the cancellation, the Eden Project offered alternative trading opportunities on the Saturday. Williams managed to sell some goods at this venue and at various markets but still faced significant losses. She revealed, “We probably lost about £4,000 to £5,000. We made more Scotch eggs, and we gave them away to the other traders and people who were in there, the exhibitors.” Williams also noted that approximately £2,500 worth of their product had been given away to avoid wastage, stating, “We haven’t broken even yet at all, [not] anywhere near it.”
Other businesses were similarly impacted. Sally Lugg from Primrose Herd Butchery reported losses of at least £10,000 and described the cancellation as a shock. She said, “I think I was in shock, to be honest, like most people, very shocked at the decision and as the day went on, we just had to try and mitigate some of the losses that sadly all of us have had to encounter.” In contrast, Lucy Sheers, proprietor of Lucy Bakes, found a silver lining amid the disappointment. By offering a 50% discount on her products at her Hayle shop, she attracted an unprecedented queue. Sheers recalled, “I didn’t get back to the shop until just before 11:00 BST, and the queue was already 25 metres down the road, and I’ve never seen that before… That queue continued for about three hours, and we sold out. Although the show was cancelled, I think in the long run this could be very good and help the growth of my small business.”
Mark Stoddart, the show secretary, explained that the decision to cancel was unavoidable due to substantial weather-related damage. He emphasized that the safety of the attendees was paramount, stating the conditions created “not a safe environment for people.
