Sir Keir Starmer has recently made it clear to his supporters that he intends to participate in any Labour leadership contest that may arise. Previously, while the prime minister and his close allies maintained that he would not step down if a challenge emerged, there had been uncertainty about whether he would actively seek to remain in the leadership race.

But I’d have to persuade members of the Parliamentary Labour Party to do the same.” Streeting has confirmed his intention to run and has voiced his support for Burnham in the by-election, advocating for “a proper contest with the best candidates on the field.” Following the recent upheaval, Streeting and several junior ministers resigned from government, while Burnham, often viewed as the frontrunner in any future leadership race, aims to secure a return to Westminster through the upcoming by-election
