Euromillions lottery winner dies in suspected Essex hit-and-run

Anthony Canty, a 39-year-old father of two and Euromillions lottery winner, tragically passed away following a suspected hit-and-run incident. Canty had been involved in a serious collision while riding his bicycle in Tiptree, Essex, on 21 May. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and died four days later.

Earlier in 2020, Canty, who worked as a water supply worker, performed a heroic act by administering CPR to a police officer who had collapsed on a bus. Shortly after this life-saving event, he won a £1 million Euromillions jackpot alongside his partner, Katie Sullivan. The couple celebrated their good fortune by spraying champagne and holding their oversized cheque, with Canty expressing his intention to continue working despite their win.

The hit-and-run incident involved a Ford KA, whose 18-year-old driver was arrested but subsequently released under investigation. The collision occurred on Maldon Road at approximately 06:30 BST. Police have charged the driver with several offenses, including causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop after an accident.

Essex Police are continuing their investigation and have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has relevant CCTV or dash cam footage to come forward. A police spokesperson emphasized that inquiries are ongoing as they seek to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the crash
