Jon Snow: Ex-Channel 4 News host reveals he has Alzheimer's disease

Jon Snow, who served as the main presenter of Channel 4 News for over three decades, has publicly shared that he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The 78-year-old journalist will appear alongside his wife, Precious Lunga, in an upcoming film that documents their experience following this life-altering diagnosis. The film is slated for its premiere next week.

Reflecting on his initial reaction to the diagnosis, Snow admitted, “At the beginning I wanted to hide it, there’s so much prejudice.” He further explained the stigma surrounding cognitive decline, saying, “Any sort of hint of mental decay, you’re sort of dead. There are moments when it pops up but it’s not an all day every day condition, and that’s what I cling onto.” Snow’s career highlights include his role as Channel 4 News lead presenter from 1989 until 2021, as well as his prior work with ITN as Washington correspondent and diplomatic editor during the 1980s.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer praised Snow as “a true giant in journalism” and recognized his efforts in increasing public awareness, stating he is “helping others feel less alone and raising awareness of a condition that affects so many families.” Regarding the personal impact of Alzheimer’s, Snow said, “I don’t know really. I don’t feel disabled in any way,” though he admitted to sometimes doubting the diagnosis itself when speaking with broadcaster Kirsty Lang: “I mean sometimes I doubt whether I’ve really got it.”

Precious Lunga, an epidemiologist, revealed that Jon was initially hesitant to see a doctor but eventually consulted a specialist in 2023. She recounted that he performed exceptionally well on a cognitive test, scoring 29 out of 30 on the mini-mental state exam, but the diagnosis was only confirmed after a brain scan. Michelle Dyson, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Society, described Snow’s openness in sharing his story as “a real act of courage,” emphasizing how it highlights the urgent need for quicker, more equitable access to diagnosis.

The documentary titled *Jon Snow: A Last Big Story* shows Snow investigating an environmental crisis in Zambia and will premiere at the Sheffield Documentary Festival, with a broadcast scheduled on Channel 4 for 20 June. Louisa Compton, Channel 4’s head of news, expressed deep admiration, calling Snow “part of our very fabric and dearly loved by viewers around the UK.” She noted, “It is a profound privilege that we are able to document his last big investigation, in a sensitively made film that frames Jon’s current affairs nous alongside a new life lived with Alzheimer’s,” adding hopes that the film will raise awareness about coping with such a diagnosis.

During his extensive broadcasting career, Snow reported on numerous historic events, including the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nelson Mandela’s release, and Barack Obama’s inauguration. His contributions to television journalism have earned him significant recognition, including the Bafta Richard Dimbleby Award in 2005 and the Bafta Fellowship in 2015, which is one of Bafta’s highest honours. Additionally, he has been honoured with ten Royal Television Society awards, six of which were for presenter of the year
