Lady Pamela Hicks, who served as a bridesmaid to Queen Elizabeth II, has passed away at the age of 97, according to her daughter. India Hicks shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, referring to her mother as a “cherished institution, but truly the last of her kind.” She acknowledged that while the passing of someone who lived such a full life is not a tragedy, the grief will still be deeply felt.
A spokesman for King Charles III expressed that the king was “greatly saddened to learn of the death of Lady Pamela Hicks,” balancing his sorrow with “the fondest memories and deepest gratitude for her long life and loyal service to Queen Elizabeth.” Lady Pamela had been a lady-in-waiting to the late Queen and was also the daughter of Louis Mountbatten, making her a cousin of Prince Philip.
Lady Pamela was married to the renowned British interior designer David Hicks until his death in 1998. She was present with Princess Elizabeth during the journey to Kenya in 1952 when Elizabeth received the news of her father’s death and her ascension to the throne. Lady Pamela recounted this moment on her daughter India’s podcast in 2019, saying: “As she (Elizabeth) comes into the room. I think ‘Oh, poor girl, her father’s died’. So I go over to her, give her a hug and think ‘Oh my god, it’s the Queen’ so I go into a deep curtsy.” She also recalled the Queen saying, “I’m so sorry. It means we’ve all got to go back… She was only thinking of all of us.”
Born in Barcelona in 1929, Lady Pamela spent her life closely connected to the Royal Family and maintained a sharp mind, impeccable style, and effortless charm throughout her years, as described by her daughter. She shared her reflections on being a bridesmaid in 2017, recalling the experience as a “tremendous rush” due to limited rehearsal time when she returned from India just days before the wedding. Lady Pamela attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022, but chose not to attend King Charles III’s coronation in 2023, a decision her daughter noted was met without any offense. She is survived by her three children: Edwina, Ashley, and India
