Downing Street has condemned attempts by outsiders to interfere in the UK’s democracy and sow discord, following remarks made by JD Vance regarding the murder of Henry Nowak. The US vice-president attributed the death of the 18-year-old British student, who was stabbed to death in December by Vickrum Digwa, to what he called a “mass invasion of migrants” and asserted that “the only response is righteous anger.”
In response to Vance’s comments posted on social media platform X, a Downing Street spokesperson noted that the Nowak family has expressed their wish for Henry’s death not to be exploited to create further division within the country. The spokesperson emphasized, “Our politics should bring people together even in the most terrible of circumstances. That is who we are as a country.”
Vance described the killing as “tragic as it is enraging,” arguing that Nowak might still be alive if previous generations of European elites had resisted what he referred to as “the politics of self-hatred and the mass invasion of migrants.” His message echoed a statement from the US State Department, which condemned “ideological conditioning and two-tiered policing” as symptoms of a broader civilizational decline that must be rejected throughout Western societies.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has criticized tech billionaire Elon Musk for “trying to whip up division” in connection with the Nowak case. Musk posted on X urging people to share footage that showed police handcuffing Nowak as he lay dying, claiming the officers had “cravenly kowtowed to his murderer.” The release of bodycam footage led to violent protests in Southampton, during which police were attacked, resulting in eleven officers and a police dog being injured. Two individuals were subsequently arrested. Digwa was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years after fatally stabbing Nowak with a 21cm blade, which he said he carried as part of his Sikh faith, following an attack rooted in a false claim of racial victimization. In the wake of the case, political parties including the Conservatives and Reform UK have criticized what they label as “two-tier policing,” alleging inconsistent treatment of different groups by law enforcement. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey also condemned attempts to politicize Nowak’s death, stating, “we all need to resist attempts like this to politicise Henry Nowak’s death and divide our country – whether they come from MAGA politicians like Vance or their cronies here in the UK.”
