Tributes have been pouring in for Rushabh Patel, a 28-year-old man who tragically lost his life after trying to rescue two friends from the River Great Ouse. On Sunday, 24 May, Rushabh was enjoying a picnic with his wife Mili and their 18-month-old daughter, Vrumi, at Bury Fields in Newport Pagnell when the incident unfolded. During their time outdoors, Rushabh noticed his friends struggling in the water and immediately jumped in to help.
Despite his brave efforts, Rushabh suffered a cardiac arrest while in the river and drowned. Following the rescue attempt, he was airlifted to Milton Keynes University Hospital where he passed away on 28 May. Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service sent four crews to assist at the scene, which is locally known as The Beach. Thames Valley Police confirmed that emergency services found a male receiving medical attention upon arrival.
Mili, 30, from Milton Keynes, shared her heartbreak over the loss of her husband, describing him as “a lovely husband and father who always wanted to help everyone.” She recalled the family outing during the heatwave, saying, “We were so happy playing with our daughter Vrumi.” She went on to say that when Rushabh heard their friends call for help, he didn’t hesitate to act but that, after he got into trouble himself, she was in shock and “just hoped he would wake up and he would be OK.”
An online fundraiser created in Rushabh’s memory has already raised more than £40,000. Mili expressed her deep sorrow, saying she wished some “magic would happen and he would come back.” The funeral is set to take place at Crownhill Crematorium in Milton Keynes, attended by his parents and brother, who lives in India. Coroners have announced that an inquest into Rushabh’s death will be opened soon
