An inquest jury is set to examine whether any actions or failures by police officers, or any delays in medical treatment, played a role in the death of Henry Nowak. The 18-year-old student from Chafford Hundred, Essex, was arrested and handcuffed after his assailant, 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa, neglected to inform officers that he had fatally stabbed Nowak with a 21cm blade in Southampton.
During the resumption of the hearing, Hampshire coroner Jason Pegg indicated that the full details surrounding Nowak’s death on 3 December 2025 have yet to be thoroughly investigated. He announced that a comprehensive inquest with a jury is scheduled for 20 September 2027, though he expressed hope that this date could be moved earlier. At Southampton Crown Court, it was revealed that Nowak repeatedly informed officers he had been stabbed and was struggling to breathe as he lay dying.
When Nowak lost consciousness, an officer initiated CPR without recognizing that the young man had a serious wound to his chest, according to trial evidence. Coroner Pegg emphasized, “The issue in this case is likely to be whether any act or omission by a police officer or any delay in the treatment Henry Nowak received caused or contributed to death.”
Vickrum Digwa, who claimed to police that Nowak had attacked him, was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years. During sentencing, Judge William Mousley KC referenced the pathologist’s statement that “no emergency medical treatment would have permitted access to the bleeding vein.” The judge added, “In simple terms, he would not have survived, however quickly he received first aid, CPR or expert medical treatment.” Coroner Pegg also stated that the state has a “duty to carry out a public investigation… in which Henry’s family can fully participate,” a process the family could not engage with during the trial. The family was not present at the brief eight-minute hearing held in Winchester
