My husband has been missing on Ben Nevis since February

Kym McGillicuddy is holding on to hope while she continues to await news about her husband, Brian, an American climber who has been missing on Ben Nevis for nearly four months. The last communication between the couple occurred on 17 February when Kym sent Brian a text saying “I love you,” just two days before he was officially reported missing on the UK’s tallest mountain. Since then, despite extensive search efforts, Brian has not been found.

Brian, 64, a seasoned climber from New York, had been eagerly anticipating this trip to Scotland, which was his second time attempting Ben Nevis. According to Kym, climbing has been a lifelong passion for Brian, who began as a child and later developed a strong interest in rock and ice climbing as an adult. He was particularly fond of locations such as Scotland, Italy, and Yosemite, and often climbed in the Adirondack Mountains near their home. Kym, who was introduced to climbing by Brian, shared that they used to travel together whenever possible.

The couple maintained contact during Brian’s two-week trip, exchanging messages adjusted for the time difference, which initially eased Kym’s concerns when communication lapsed. Brian spent the first week of his visit with one group of friends and the second with another climbing partner from America. It was during this second week, on a Thursday in February, that Brian was reported missing after his climbing partner raised the alarm. Kym learned of the situation through a mutual friend who saw the public appeal for information. It is thought that Brian was attempting to climb the challenging Orion Face Direct ice route when contact was lost.

Search operations included mountain rescue teams, coastguard personnel, drone pilots, and search and rescue dogs, but were hampered by severe winter weather. Despite the shift in police focus from search and rescue to recovery and the temporary suspension of active searching, Police Scotland has pledged to continue exploring the area as conditions improve. While a memorial service was held for Brian in their hometown, Kym described the family’s pain and unresolved grief, highlighting the difficulty of not having closure or a death certificate yet. She said, “It still feels like this is happening to somebody else. It’s a horrible reality to live in.” Brian is described as 6ft 1in tall, slim, with short grey and white hair, and was last seen wearing a white climbing helmet, dark blue jacket, white jeans, and blue and red gaiters. Police continue to appeal for any information from the public to aid in determining Brian’s final movements on Ben Nevis
