A postal worker from Pembrokeshire has been sentenced to prison for operating an illegal sports streaming business that generated over £200,000 in profits. Michael David Barrow, based in Milford Haven, ran an extensive piracy scheme involving modified hardware such as hacked Amazon Fire TV Sticks, which allowed customers to access sports content for a fraction of the legitimate subscription cost, Swansea Crown Court was informed.
During his trial, it was revealed that Barrow’s operation supplied apps and hardware enabling unlawfully streamed access to major broadcasters including Sky Sport, TNT Sport, and BT Sport. The court heard that his business affected the broadcasting industry to the tune of several million pounds in potential losses. Barrow, a father of two, was handed a 38-month prison sentence, with the judge condemning his conduct as “large-scale commercial fraud” motivated by “pure greed,” despite his awareness of the severe penalties for such offenses.
Evidence showed that even after an initial police warning and a cease and desist notice, Barrow continued his illegal activities. Officers described finding a “football-themed bar” at the back of his property where customers could watch the pirated streams first-hand. Barrow’s criminal enterprise spanned over four years, during which he managed to attract more than 1,800 customers by offering a bundled subscription and hardware package at around £120 annually, substantially undercutting legitimate providers. He strictly vetted new clients through recommendations to avoid infiltration by anti-piracy agents.
The prosecution, representing the Premier League, highlighted Barrow’s sophisticated technical knowledge that enabled him to advise customers on evading broadcaster anti-piracy measures. Financial investigations revealed that he had received approximately £170,000 in PayPal payments and an additional £45,000 into his bank accounts connected to the illicit streaming service. Despite warnings from the police and having his social media account suspended for intellectual property violations, Barrow persisted, even requiring customers to communicate through encrypted messaging to avoid detection. Barrow pleaded guilty to multiple offenses related to supplying fraudulent streaming equipment and has no prior criminal record.
