Jill Scott, the former England Lioness, has announced an ambitious cycle and running challenge covering 388 miles to support Sport Relief. This journey will take place over five days, starting at Wembley Stadium, the venue where she achieved her memorable victory at the 2022 Euros, and finishing at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, her hometown club. Along the route, she plans to stop at various significant football stadiums and community centers that played an important role throughout her life and career.
Beginning on June 8th, Scott’s itinerary includes visits to prominent football venues such as Aston Villa’s Villa Park, Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, and Manchester City, as well as grassroots teams like Bishop Auckland FC Ladies. The challenge involves a mix of cycling and running: a 112-mile bike ride on the first day followed by a 99-mile ride, then a 38-mile run to Manchester. On day four, she will cycle 111 miles northwards before concluding with a marathon distance of 28 miles into Sunderland on June 12th.
Scott emphasized the critical support she received as a young athlete from youth clubs, coaches, and physical education teachers. Reflecting on these formative experiences, she expressed gratitude for the safe spaces and trusted mentors that helped guide her journey into professional football. “As a young girl, I really had to rely on coaches and PE teachers to guide me on my journey of wanting to be a footballer,” she said. Scott also lamented that many young people today still do not have access to such opportunities.
Commenting on the evolution of women’s football, Scott noted that perceptions and participation have dramatically improved. She shared an experience visiting the Southwick Neighbourhood Youth Project in Sunderland, observing, “there was the same number of girls playing as there was boys and I didn’t even really think about it until I walked away.” She added, “But the fact that I didn’t think about it – that’s how far we’ve come.” Fully dedicated to completing the challenge, Scott stated she is “100% committed” because she wants to “make a difference” in people’s lives through her efforts
