Nicola Sturgeon has spoken out about the emotional toll she is experiencing following the revelation that her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, embezzled £400,000 from the Scottish National Party (SNP), which she led for many years. In an exclusive interview with BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, Sturgeon expressed feelings of being unfairly punished, stating she feels as though she is “serving a sentence for a crime I did not commit.” During the conversation, she struggled to contain her emotions, particularly when recalling gifts from Murrell that were later discovered to have been purchased with misappropriated party funds.
Throughout the interview, Sturgeon firmly denied any involvement or awareness of the financial misconduct that took place between 2010 and 2022. She made it clear she would not apologise for crimes committed by her former husband, asserting, “I am not responsible for the crimes that my former husband committed and I’m not going to apologise for somebody else’s crimes.” While she acknowledged her role as SNP leader from 2014 until 2023, a position that entailed some responsibility for the party’s finances, she denied any knowledge of the fraud. Notably, she was not charged following police investigations into the scandal.
Sturgeon highlighted the broader implications of being blamed for the actions of a partner, particularly for women, and emphasized her commitment to personal accountability only for her own decisions and actions. She said, “For my own sake, but for the sake of people out there, a lot of women who end up finding themselves blamed for the actions of the men in their lives, I’m not going to contribute to that kind of sense that I am responsible for somebody else’s crimes.” She also referenced the betrayal she experienced, echoing earlier remarks where she described feeling “deceived, betrayed and lied to” by Murrell.
Peter Murrell, who served as SNP chief executive for over two decades until his resignation in March 2023 amid controversy over membership figures, was arrested as part of the Operation Branchform investigation into the party’s finances. The items he purchased with party funds included luxury goods, jewellery, cosmetics, two cars, and a motorhome. Sturgeon became visibly upset when discussing a necklace Murrell bought for her from a Shetland jewellers shop, a gift she treasured and often wore publicly. She described the shock and heartache of learning that such presents were financed through stolen money, stating, “The idea that I would have gone about wearing things that I had known were anything other than what they were presented as, a gift from my husband… causes a level of, I don’t know, pain, bewilderment.” Sturgeon herself was arrested and questioned as part of the inquiry but was released without charges
