A troubling reality has emerged concerning young people under 24, with over a million facing uncertain futures as they find themselves without employment or access to training programs that would prepare them for the job market. Experts are describing this situation as a “lost generation,” highlighting the severity of the challenge. To better understand the personal impact, five individuals currently navigating these difficulties shared their experiences.
Zaynah, 24, left college a year ago and has since applied to more than 200 jobs without receiving any responses. She has struggled with confidence and social interaction, partly due to a health condition that prevented her from pursuing her passion for nail art. Now, she is focusing on make-up roles and retail positions, finding some support through a six-week charity initiative called Spear, which has helped her build greater confidence. Zaynah acknowledges that her lack of prior work experience has been a significant barrier and believes many peers are also held back by uncertainty about their career paths.
Luke, 23, who studied product design at university, reports a similarly difficult job search after submitting applications for over 400 positions. He criticizes the repetitive and frustrating nature of online application processes and feels disillusioned by the lack of job opportunities despite his qualifications.
