During the recent heatwave, residents in Rhondda Cynon Taf were instructed to boil their tap water following a pipe burst at Welsh Water’s Maerdy treatment works. This failure resulted in untreated water, contaminated with traces of the parasite cryptosporidium, entering the local water supply. Consequently, a five-day precautionary boil water notice was put in place, concluding on Tuesday. Welsh Water has since announced plans to compensate those affected by the disruption.
Jack Pattison, a father of two living in Tonyrefail, one of the impacted areas, described the timing as particularly challenging, saying, “It’s the worst possible time for this to happen.” Many residents faced difficulty coping with the 30°C temperatures while managing the added inconvenience of boiling water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. The water company apologized for the disruption and confirmed that customers subject to the notice for two days or longer would receive £20 per day in compensation, with payments expected to be made within ten days.
The detection of cryptosporidium, a parasite that can cause stomach illnesses, prompted Welsh Water to impose the precautionary measures. To support residents during the heatwave, the company distributed hundreds of bottled water containers through stations established in affected communities. Alan and Christina Jones from Tonyrefail, both with health issues, shared their experience waiting in a lengthy queue for bottled water. Alan noted, “We’ve boiled water so far because it was too busy here yesterday. The queue was about half-a-mile long.” Diane, another local resident, commented on the added difficulty: “With the hot weather, it’s really bad because you can’t run the tap and have a glass of water.”
Welsh Water’s Chief Operating Officer Steve Wilson explained the approach taken to lift the boil notice, highlighting the gradual nature of water movement through the network. He said, “Water moves gradually through this network, largely by gravity, meaning some communities receive refreshed treated water sooner than others.” The company conducted thorough sampling, testing, and network flushing before removing restrictions across all areas by 19:30 BST on Tuesday. Wilson also mentioned that bottled water stations would remain open as long as necessary and expressed regret for the significant disruption caused, particularly during such hot weather. “We recognise the significant disruption and inconvenience this incident has caused, particularly during the current period of hot weather and we are sorry for the impact on customers and communities,” he said
