Liverpool schools to undergo summer works

This summer, a project will be undertaken to safely remove contaminated soil from two schools in Liverpool. Redbridge High School and Bank View School will both undergo remediation after asbestos-containing materials were found in landscaped areas on their grounds.

The contamination was initially detected in 2019 and is thought to be connected to old allotment structures that existed on the sites prior to the construction of the schools. Although both the risk of exposure and the hazard itself are considered “low,” the decision was made to carry out the removal work to eliminate any remaining concerns and ensure a safe environment for students, staff, and the local community.

Specialist contractor Beech Group has been appointed to carry out the removal of the affected soil. Their approach includes safely disposing of the contaminated materials at licensed facilities, followed by the installation of a protective barrier topped with clean soil. Preliminary preparation activities are set for the May half-term, while the main remediation process is planned from July 20 to August 28, coinciding with the summer holiday break to avoid disrupting school activities.

Measures to ensure safety during the works include continuous air quality monitoring, secure site fencing, controlled handling of waste, and the management of construction traffic to minimize impact on the surrounding roads. Upon completion, the school grounds will be fully restored and safe for ongoing use. Cllr Jo Kennedy, Cabinet Member for Employment, Educational Attainment and Skills, stated: “We understand that any presence of asbestos will cause concern, which is why we are taking action to remove contaminated soil and make these school grounds safe. These works are being carefully planned to minimise disruption and ensure pupils, staff and the local community can be reassured.”
