Corey Edwards, who previously stood as a candidate for Reform UK in the Senedd elections, has been appointed as a special adviser to the party’s Welsh leader, Dan Thomas. Edwards resigned from his candidacy just before the election after a photograph surfaced showing him seemingly performing a Nazi salute. The image, published by Nation.Cymru, featured Edwards raising his right arm while holding a finger under his nose. Reform UK stated that the photo was taken in 2019.

Despite stepping down amid the controversy and citing mental health reasons, Edwards has now been listed within the Welsh Parliament’s internal system in an advisory role to Thomas. This development comes shortly after Reform UK secured its position as the second-largest party in the Senedd. The precise circumstances surrounding the image’s origin remain unclear, with the party emphasizing that no formal comment would be made about its staff appointments.

The appointment has drawn criticism from other Welsh political groups. Plaid Cymru noted that the decision “will raise eyebrows,” while Labour expressed serious concerns about the judgment of Reform UK’s leadership, describing the situation as one more example of questionable decisions by the party. Reform UK responded by highlighting what it called hypocrisy from Labour, referencing the appointment of Peter Mandelson, a close associate of Jeffrey Epstein, to a high-profile diplomatic post under a Labour Prime Minister.

Edwards’ political background includes experience as a senior parliamentary assistant in the House of Commons starting in October 2019. He later worked with former Conservative MP and UK government minister David TC Davies. When the controversial photo began circulating, Nigel Farage claimed that Edwards was impersonating the character Basil Fawlty. However, a statement from Edwards at the time also suggested he was mimicking Welsh footballer Wayne Hennessey
