In 2019, during a visit to a jewellery store in Shetland, Nicola Sturgeon’s husband, Peter Murrell, made a notable remark to the shop owner, declaring himself as “the man with the money.” At that period, Murrell was serving as the chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP), while Sturgeon held the dual roles of party leader and Scotland’s first minister. The visit was connected to a by-election campaign, during which Murrell purchased a 9-carat gold pendant featuring a depiction of the Northern Lights for his wife.
This particular necklace has since come under scrutiny, as it is among many expensive items Murrell acknowledged buying with funds he illicitly took from the SNP. At Edinburgh High Court, 61-year-old Murrell admitted to embezzling over £400,000 from the party over a twelve-year stretch from August 2010 to October 2022. His guilty plea included the unlawful acquisition of luxury goods such as jewellery, cosmetics, two vehicles, and a motorhome.
Reflecting on the situation, Sturgeon expressed profound personal distress, saying she felt “deceived and let down by a husband she loved and trusted.” She further stated that she had “no reason to doubt” he was using his own money, noting their high combined incomes, minimal social engagements, and infrequent holidays. Additionally, she highlighted their separate bank accounts and lack of access to Murrell’s financial details, reinforcing her claim of being misled.
Kenneth Rae, owner of Shetland Jewellery, recounted the day Murrell visited on 28 July 2019. While Nicola Sturgeon was in the workshop, Murrell reportedly announced, “I’m the man with the money. I need to buy something.” Rae remembered Murrell selecting a pendant named the Mirrie Dancer Drongs, which illustrates the sea stacks off Hillswick illuminated by the Northern Lights above. The store owner estimated the purchase cost at around £850, although court documents later listed a figure of £425. Years later, Police Scotland flew officers to Shetland to collect statements as part of their embezzlement investigation. Rae recounted his surprise at the police presence, stating they were flown from Glasgow at great expense and gathered evidence before departing. Murrell remains in custody and is scheduled for sentencing next month
