RAF jet carrying John Healey has signal jammed near Russia border

Earlier this week, an RAF aircraft carrying the UK’s defence secretary experienced signal interference while flying close to the Russian border. The jet was returning to the UK on Thursday following John Healey’s visit to British troops stationed in Estonia. According to a report by The Times, the aircraft’s GPS was disabled for the duration of the three-hour flight, forcing the pilots to rely on alternative navigation systems.

The interference is widely believed to have originated from Russia. Although it remains unclear whether Healey himself was intentionally targeted, the flight’s route was publicly visible on aircraft tracking platforms during the incident. The Ministry of Defence has been approached for a statement but has not yet responded.

During his visit to Estonia, Healey met with UK service members engaged in a Nato-led military exercise situated near the Russian border. This event highlights ongoing tensions in the region, which have been marked by several recent confrontations between Russian military aircraft and Western forces.

One notable encounter last month involved a Russian Su-35 fighter approaching a Rivet Joint surveillance plane closely enough to trigger its emergency systems and disable its autopilot. Another instance saw a Su-27 jet make six passes directly in front of an RAF aircraft, coming within six metres of its nose, underscoring the increasingly aggressive maneuvers observed in the area
