Why did I put myself through the pain of going to court, says rape victim

A teenager who was sexually assaulted by two boys has expressed her profound disappointment with the fact that they did not receive custodial sentences. At the time of the attack, the girl was 15 years old and has chosen to share her story anonymously, accompanied by her family.

Reflecting on the court’s ruling, she commented that the judgment seemed to convey a troubling message. Although the judge indicated the boys’ actions were unacceptable, the legal outcome appeared to treat the offense with leniency because the perpetrators were still minors. As she put it, the decision “almost made it seem as if what the boys did was not OK, but it was OK in the eyes of the law because they were still children.”

The sentence imposed by Judge Nicholas Rowland is now under review by the attorney general. Judge Rowland had expressed a desire to avoid “criminalising” the “very young” defendants during the sentencing on Thursday. Meanwhile, the victim shared her feelings about the entire experience with BBC presenter Laura Kuenssberg, questioning the purpose of enduring the trial and the emotional toll it took: “Why did I put myself through the pain of going to court, going through a trial, reliving everything…It sort of gave me the sense of what’s the point?”

The young girl’s statement captures the struggle many victims face when their abusers receive sentences perceived as lenient, highlighting complex issues in the legal handling of juvenile offenders in such serious cases
