Sufiyaan Salam, a multi-talented artist who has previously earned recognition from Stormzy, received a Bafta nomination, and created a music video for Sir Elton John, has now penned one of the most anticipated debut novels of the year. His book, *Wimmy Road Boyz*, unfolds over a single vivid night out in Manchester, specifically along Wilmslow Road, including the vibrant Curry Mile.
The morning after such a night, the atmosphere along the Curry Mile shifts dramatically. The row of restaurants, mostly shuttered, sees only a few people and cars drifting by. This contrasts starkly with the previous evening, when the area teemed with revelers celebrating Eid. “There’s something interesting about seeing it this morning,” Salam remarks, reflecting on the quiet street. “It looks cool, but it’s just a street, and there’s a lot of takeaways and shisha bars and a random pharmacy.”
Salam fondly recalls the transformation of the Curry Mile during such festivities, describing it as a “mythical” place. “For me, when I was a kid, and coming here as a teenager with the boys, and when I come here as an adult, there’s this feeling that it’s not quite a reality,” he explains. “You’ve slipped into this… It’s like a religious pilgrimage in a way. That’s what’s interesting.” This unique energy is what he sought to capture in his novel, which centers on three British-Pakistani friends navigating a chaotic night on Wilmslow Road.
