The opening day of BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Sunderland reached an electrifying climax with Fatboy Slim headlining the dance-focused lineup. Performing at Herrington Country Park, the legendary DJ entertained thousands of festival attendees with a set full of nostalgia and non-stop hits that had the crowd chanting and bouncing along throughout the evening.
Fatboy Slim, whose real name is Norman Cook, wasted no time in showcasing his extensive career by teasing his iconic track “Praise You” and cleverly incorporating Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” into the mix. At 62, he rewarded the audience’s patience by delivering a full version of his club anthem, seamlessly blended with an array of inventive samples. This creative approach continued with his famous tune “The Rockafeller Skank,” which was given a twist with Eminem’s Slim Shady vocals. The set also featured a memorable rendition of The Killers’ “Mr Brightside,” with fans enthusiastically singing every word back to him.
Ahead of his performance, Fatboy Slim shared with BBC Newsbeat his excitement about playing a sanitized version of his songs, saying, “I’m looking forward to enjoying my songs without any swear words.” He also joked about preparing for the live broadcast by breaking down his set over the past week. Known for his early work in the 1980s with The Housemartins and Beats International, Cook established himself as a prominent figure in the 1990s dance music scene. Alongside artists like the Chemical Brothers and Death in Vegas, he helped pioneer big beat, a genre blending elements of hip hop and acid house.
Other notable acts on the day included Australian house and techno producer Fisher, who lit up the main stage with pyrotechnics during his high-energy set. His performance featured hits such as his remix of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” and the Grammy-nominated track “Losing It.” Prior to Fisher, American producer MK captivated the crowd with a purple-lit sky and confetti cannons as he introduced singer Poppy Baskcomb for their new collaboration “Zone.” MK energized the crowd with tracks like “Back & Forth,” a remix of Celeste’s “Stop This Flame,” and his viral hit “Dior.”
The day also featured sets from Sonny Fodera, who kicked off the party with a lineup of bangers including “Think About Us” and a remix of Disclosure’s “You & Me.” Clementine Douglas made a surprise guest appearance during Fodera’s performance to deliver their track “Tell Me,” along with a vibrant version of “Asking.” The dance-centric opening day spanned various styles and generations, with DJs such as Notion and trance specialist Marlon Hoffstadt also taking part. Unfortunately, German artist HorsegiirL had to cancel her scheduled appearance due to illness. Attendance for the entire three-day festival is expected to be in the tens of thousands, with stars Zara Larsson and Olivia Dean set to headline the following days
