A jury has been discharged following an unsuccessful attempt to reach a verdict in the retrial of two brothers accused of assaulting a police officer at Manchester Airport. The case centered on Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 21, and Muhammad Amaad, 26, who stood trial for allegedly attacking Greater Manchester PC Zachary Marsden near the car park pay station in terminal two on 23 July 2024.
According to evidence presented at Liverpool Crown Court, the police approached the Amaaz brothers following an earlier incident at a coffee shop. Despite the jury being instructed that a majority decision was acceptable, nearly 20 hours of deliberation concluded without any agreement, leading to the jury’s discharge. Throughout the proceedings, the defendants maintained their innocence, asserting they acted in lawful self-defence, or in protection of each other.
The trial has now been paused with a future hearing scheduled for 29 May, allowing the Crown Prosecution Service time to decide if a third trial will be pursued. A representative from Greater Manchester Police commented on the outcome, expressing disappointment that the jury could not reach a verdict but emphasizing respect for the judicial process.
