The Ministry of Defence reported on Wednesday that two Russian warplanes conducted a hazardous interception of an unarmed RAF reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea last month. According to the MoD, a Russian Su-35 fighter approached the British surveillance plane at such close range that it activated the aircraft’s emergency alert systems. In addition, a Su-27 jet performed six passes in front of the RAF plane during the encounter.
This incident involved the Rivet Joint aircraft, which was on a routine international mission. The purpose of the flight was to support NATO’s efforts to bolster security along its eastern borders. The MoD emphasized that the operation was a standard patrol aimed at maintaining vigilance in the region.
Frank Gardner, the BBC’s Security Correspondent, described the event as “really serious.” He highlighted the risks associated with these close encounters, particularly given the heightened tensions between Russia and NATO. Gardner pointed out that such incidents carry the risk of rapid escalation that could have broader consequences for international relations.
