Starting this week, a comprehensive improvement project will take place along Walton Breck Road, aiming to enhance the local environment for residents. The extensive scheme is divided into three distinct phases, with the initial work set to begin on Monday, 18 May, and the entire project scheduled for completion by spring 2027.
The enhancements will include a combination of highway improvements, upgraded bus stops, improved pedestrian amenities, and the renewal of outdated utility infrastructure. Liverpool City Council has arranged for the phases to either run concurrently or successively with minimal gaps, ensuring a seamless approach rather than multiple separate closures spread over a long period. Throughout the duration of the works, temporary road and lane closures will be implemented to facilitate the necessary activities.
Phase one, which commences on 18 May and is expected to conclude by 29 May, involves highways maintenance overseen by Dowhigh under contract with the Council. This stage will focus on smaller-scale repairs such as resurfacing junction areas, fixing pedestrian pathways, and renewing drainage systems along Walton Breck Road. Following that, phase two starts on 26 May and is managed by Cadent, the local gas network operator. This phase, lasting until August, is part of a long-term effort to replace some of the region’s oldest gas pipes—many dating back to 1873—running beneath Walton Breck Road and surrounding streets. Cadent has historically responded to over 70 maintenance calls for these aging pipes in the last twenty years, and the upgrades will reduce the frequency of unexpected disruptions while ensuring a safer, more reliable gas supply. Additionally, this renewal supports environmental goals by decreasing methane emissions and facilitating the introduction of greener gases like biomethane.
The final phase, kicking off in August, will be led by Eric Wright Civil Engineering on behalf of the Council. This stage will deliver further road and footpath resurfacing, pedestrian crossing improvements, and upgraded bus stops, backed by nearly £4 million of investment. Resident feedback gathered through consultation sessions has directly influenced the project design, shaping junction layouts and crossing points to reflect community priorities. Ahead of and throughout all phases, residents will be informed of any planned closures and diversions, with clear signage provided to assist travelers. Notably, construction will pause during the busy summer event period at Anfield to keep Walton Breck Road open and avoid congestion.
These infrastructure upgrades constitute a significant segment of the broader Anfield Regeneration Programme, aimed at revitalising the neighbourhood. Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, commented: “We have been working closely with Dowhigh, Cadent, and Eric Wright to minimise the amount of disruption for people living and working in the area. Residents will be kept informed at every step of the works. The work that we are carrying out on Walton Breck Road is for the residents first and foremost. When complete, it will mean a safer, more reliable and more accessible route for everyone who uses it. We appreciate everyone’s patience while the works take place and we’re confident the end result will bring real, long‑term benefits to the community.” Lucy Sterry, Head of Work Management (North West) at Cadent, added: “Our responsibility is to ensure that the gas used in the local community is distributed safely and reliably, 24/7. Four out of every five homes in the area have gas central heating. While the pipes underground right now are safe, they are coming to the end of their operating life – in some cases, they’re the best part of 150 years old. We’ve worked closely with Liverpool City Council and other companies which need to do work in the same area, to get this planned and delivered in one, big co-ordinated job. We will keep the community informed – with regular visits to customers and with drop-in events – so that we identify concerns and resolve them.”
