Michelle Welsh: Labour MP failed by NHS appointed first maternity adviser

Michelle Welsh, the Labour MP representing Sherwood Forest, has been named the government’s inaugural maternity adviser. Her appointment follows her personal experience giving birth, which was part of a major investigation into the most significant maternity service failures in NHS history. The Department of Health emphasized that Welsh will collaborate with families, the NHS, maternity organizations, and the government to campaign for improved and safer care for mothers, babies, and families.

Welsh, who gave birth to her son William in 2020, has openly spoken about how their lives were endangered due to shortcomings at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust. She currently chairs the all-party parliamentary group for maternity and expressed how her own journey has fueled her commitment to fight for more compassionate maternity services. The results of the independent inquiry into the failings at NUH, led by senior midwife Donna Ockenden, are scheduled to be published in June.

In her new role as national maternity adviser, Welsh said she feels honored and described the position as deeply personal. She acknowledged the physical and emotional scars many women endure during childbirth and emphasized her dedication to pushing for reforms. She intends to focus on safer staffing levels, stronger accountability, addressing inequalities, listening to women’s experiences, and ensuring lessons are learned when failures occur.

Health Secretary James Murray praised Welsh’s appointment, highlighting her commitment and expertise, and called her a “powerful champion” for women and families. He said this announcement marks a meaningful advancement in efforts to make maternity services safer across England. Additionally, Kate Brintworth, England’s chief midwifery officer, expressed her enthusiasm about collaborating with Welsh to enhance maternity care nationwide. Welsh will also be a member of the national maternity and neonatal taskforce established by the former health secretary Wes Streeting
