Ashleigh Stanley chose an unconventional approach for her wedding by exchanging vows in a dressing gown, slippers, and hair rollers, aiming to give her husband, Jake Stanley, a glimpse of what married life would truly be like. The couple, who have been together since childhood and dated for 13 years, tied the knot at Llanerch Vineyard in Hensol, Vale of Glamorgan. Ashleigh, 29, intentionally kept the first ceremony casual and without makeup to reflect the everyday reality of their relationship.

Initially, Ashleigh and Jake planned a traditional ceremony with 150 guests, walking down the aisle to the hymn “Calon Lân,” a song cherished by Ashleigh’s late grandmother. However, they were informed that the hymn’s religious nature disqualified its use in a civil ceremony. As a solution, they held a small legal ceremony first, which allowed them to keep things informal and relaxed, followed by a larger celebrant-led service where the hymn could be played.

On the wedding day, Ashleigh appeared in a white robe and slippers, while Jake wore a black Under Armour top with shorts and white trainers. Their families embraced the unique style; both mothers and Ashleigh’s daughter donned pink bridal pajamas, while the fathers and brothers dressed casually. Venue staff even remarked that it was the first time they had hosted a dressing gown wedding. Ashleigh explained her motivation: “I said ‘I’ll be in my pyjamas most of my married life and this is how he sees me most of the time, so this is how I’m going to marry him.’ I gave him a reality check of what married life would be like.”

The couple’s wedding day held special significance, coinciding with what would have been Ashleigh’s grandmother’s 100th birthday. Ashleigh spoke fondly of the song “Calon Lân,” saying, “If we started to sing Calon Lân, she knew every word. It’s a very personal song and I wanted to make sure I was walking down the aisle to this.” Following the informal legal ceremony that morning, the pair celebrated a second time with a traditional ceremony. For this event, Ashleigh wore an elegant off-the-shoulder white gown, complete with curled hair and makeup. She noted their guests appreciated the brevity of the legal ceremony: “Our guests said how they preferred our service to any other wedding service as it was done within 10 minutes and everyone had more time to party and get on with the day.
