Hearts head coach Derek McInnes rages at 'disgusting' Celtic penalty

The Hearts head coach expressed his frustration to Sky Sports after a late VAR decision awarded Celtic a penalty in the 96th minute. He stated, “When you heard Celtic had a 96th-minute penalty going to VAR, you just assume they get it,” reflecting his disbelief over the call. Describing the situation as unfair, he added, “It’s disgusting. We’re up against it, we’re up against everybody. I don’t think it’s a penalty. It’s so poor and it looks as though [Celtic] have been given it. They have been very fortunate.”

Before the penalty decision, Hearts were in a position where a two-goal loss at Celtic Park on Saturday would still have secured them the championship, their first since 1960. However, the awarded penalty altered the landscape significantly. Now, Hearts must avoid defeat in their upcoming match if they hope to become the first team outside of Celtic or Rangers to claim the Scottish top-flight title in forty years.

Despite the setback, Hearts’ manager remained optimistic about the upcoming challenge. He remarked, “It’s going to the last game. We’re delighted to be part of it.” His positive outlook continued as he discussed the necessity of securing a good result, saying, “To do it, we’re going to have to go and get a positive result.”

Looking ahead, McInnes expressed anticipation for what he described as an exciting contest. “I’m looking forward to it already, there’ll be no feeling sorry for ourselves. What a game it’s going to be,” he concluded, underscoring his readiness to face the challenge head-on
