Snake Pass, a notable route through the Peak District recognized as one of the most hazardous roads in England, is scheduled to close temporarily for essential ground investigation work. Derbyshire County Council has announced that the stretch between Derbyshire Level in Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir will be inaccessible from 15 June until 3 July.
Charlotte Hill, the cabinet member responsible for highways, acknowledged that the closure would cause some inconvenience for drivers but emphasized the importance of the investigations to fully understand the underlying problems at the Doctor’s Gate section of the road. The council is undertaking this work to tackle the complex challenges posed by the road’s geology.
According to the official closure notice, the road will reopen as soon as the work is completed, potentially earlier than the stated date, and access will be allowed “whenever reasonably possible” along the affected segment. Hill explained that addressing the issues on Snake Pass requires careful and resource-intensive investigations. She also mentioned collaboration with the East Midlands Combined County Authority to explore ways to ensure the A57’s long-term durability.
Jon Pearce, MP for High Peak, acknowledged the disruption the closure would cause, stating on social media that while it may frustrate local residents, commuters, and businesses, the deteriorating condition of Snake Pass cannot be ignored. The road frequently undergoes repairs and closures due to adverse weather and landslips. The council has indicated that the results of this work will help in developing proposals for future improvements that will be discussed with government partners
