Three young women’s bodies were found in the sea off Brighton’s coast earlier today. The emergency services responded after concerns were raised about someone in the water around 05:45 BST, prompting a search operation. The identities of the women have not yet been confirmed.
At this stage, it remains unclear how the women ended up in the sea. The coastguard has since concluded its search efforts and confirmed no further searches are underway. The women, believed to be between 20 and 30 years old, were initially seen near Brighton Palace Pier before drifting toward the marina area, according to PA Media reports. Their bodies were recovered close to Madeira Drive, which runs along the beachfront.
Police have set up a substantial cordon around the beach at Black Rock, which will remain in place until at least Wednesday evening. Chief Superintendent Adam Hays commented on the situation, saying, “This is a tragic incident. We are at the very early stages of our inquiries.” He also highlighted the importance of identifying the victims and making contact with their next of kin, recognizing the distress this event has caused the local community.
Local residents expressed shock and sadness following the discovery. Jilly Francis, who frequently swims in the area, remarked on the unusual circumstances given the rough conditions today. She said, “Today is very rough, so I’d be surprised if they were regular swimmers. I wouldn’t swim today because it’s too rough, but I normally swim in the summer when it’s calmer.” Meanwhile, Pam Hinchliffe, visiting the beach, described the incident as “tragic,” expressing disbelief over what might have caused it in the early hours. Brighton’s local representatives, including MP Chris Ward and council leader Bella Sankey, conveyed their condolences, while Sussex’s police and crime commissioner urged the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed
