More than 1,000 passengers held on cruise after gastrointestinal illness outbreak

More than a thousand passengers remain aboard the UK-operated cruise ship Ambition, docked in Bordeaux, France, after nearly fifty individuals developed symptoms of gastrointestinal illness. Local health officials have isolated three affected passengers within their cabins, and disembarkation at the port has been temporarily halted as a precautionary measure to prevent further spread.

Ambassador Cruise Line reported that a 92-year-old male passenger passed away onboard on Sunday; however, he had not exhibited any symptoms related to the illness. The cause of death is currently under investigation by a coroner. The cruise company expressed condolences, stating, “We are providing every support to the deceased’s friends and family and extend our most sincere condolences to them at this difficult time.”

As of 11:00 BST on Wednesday, there were 48 passengers and one crew member experiencing symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal sickness. The vessel currently holds 1,187 passengers and 514 crew members. The Ambition began its voyage from Belfast on 8 May and traveled to Liverpool the following day. The cruise line noted an increase in illness cases after additional guests boarded in Liverpool.

The operator confirmed that enhanced sanitation and preventive measures have been implemented shipwide in accordance with recognized public health guidelines. These include intensified cleaning and disinfection of shared spaces, along with ongoing encouragement for passengers to maintain hand hygiene and promptly report any symptoms to the onboard medical staff. French health authorities were informed at the scheduled stop in Bordeaux, and a medical team was sent onboard to evaluate the situation and collect samples for testing at Bordeaux University Hospital. Results are expected to take at least six hours, with passenger disembarkation suspended during this period due to the contagious nature of gastroenteritis-type illnesses. Ambassador Cruise Line emphasized, “The health, safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew remains our highest priority, and we are sincerely grateful for the patience, understanding and cooperation shown while these precautionary measures remain in place.
