New Lord Mayor of Liverpool to be sworn in

Liverpool is set to appoint a new Lord Mayor today, Wednesday 13 May. Councillor William Shortall will make history as the first wheelchair user to assume this prestigious role in the city. Throughout his year as Lord Mayor, he aims to highlight the importance of inclusion and accessibility across Liverpool.

Born and raised in Liverpool, Councillor Shortall pursued his law degree part-time at The Open University and Chester College of Law. Alongside his studies, he has actively volunteered within the community while managing life with Muscular Dystrophy, a progressive condition that affects muscle strength. His professional experience is diverse, spanning work in a public house and an electronic servicing business, as well as continued community involvement.

Since 2019, Councillor Shortall has served as an elected representative, initially for the Old Swan area and more recently for Old Swan West from 2023. In his role as Chair of Liverpool City Council’s Corporate Access Forum, he has taken a leading position in advocating for accessibility, promoting inclusive policies, and ensuring that decisions take into account the perspectives of disabled residents. Supporting him in his mayoral duties, his wife Marie will serve as Lady Mayoress, while their two adult daughters, Melissa and Laura, will act as consorts.

For his mayoral charity, Councillor Shortall has chosen the Greenbank Project. The funds raised will directly aid Greenbank College’s education, training, and employment services, along with the Greenbank Sports Academy, which provides sport and recreational activities. Those interested in contributing to The Lord Mayor’s Charity can contact Liverpool Town Hall via phone or email. Reflecting on his appointment, Councillor Shortall expressed, “It is an extraordinary honour to be invited to serve as Lord Mayor of Liverpool.” He continued, “As the first wheelchair user to hold this office in our city’s 816-year history, I am deeply proud to represent a community that values inclusion, resilience and opportunity for all.” He also acknowledged the support of his family and community, emphasizing the role he hopes to play in welcoming everyone to Liverpool and upholding its proud traditions
