Two members of the British Army parachuted onto Tristan da Cunha, a remote island in the Atlantic, to assist a British citizen suspected of having hantavirus. Alongside the paratroopers, an intensive care nurse and a specialist doctor also made the jump, ensuring medical support was immediately available upon arrival. Essential medical supplies were brought to the island as part of the operation.
The individual in question had departed from the cruise ship MV Hondius in mid-April. This vessel had experienced a serious hantavirus outbreak, and the patient resides on Tristan da Cunha, known as Britain’s most isolated inhabited overseas territory. The medical mission was therefore critical in providing timely care for the potential infection.
Captain George Lacey, who was part of the Pathfinders Platoon based at Colchester Garrison, described the drop as especially challenging due to strong winds. He acknowledged the complexity of the mission, emphasizing the difficulties they faced while executing the parachute landing under adverse weather conditions.
Since the island’s remote location makes immediate extraction impossible, Captain Lacey noted that the team would remain on Tristan da Cunha for a few days in order to manage the patient’s recovery.
