The Royal Navy is preparing to send one of its warships to the Middle East amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer, is set to position itself in the region ahead of potentially joining an international effort to ensure the security of shipping lanes. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has described this mission as “strictly defensive and independent,” emphasizing a cautious approach to the situation.
HMS Dragon stands among the six highly advanced Type 45 destroyers designed specifically for anti-aircraft and anti-missile warfare, marking it as one of Britain’s most sophisticated naval assets. The move follows the recent transit of the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle through the Suez Canal, indicating growing international naval activity in the area.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passing through it. Although a ceasefire between the US and Iran has been in effect since April, accusations of continued attacks within the strait have been exchanged by both sides, highlighting the fragile nature of the conflict.
Political leaders such as Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have promoted the idea of an international mission to protect shipping but stress that it should only proceed once active fighting ends. Sir Keir has stated that the UK will not be “dragged” into the conflict and has previously opposed the US blockade of Iranian ports. Meanwhile, the MoD reassures that defensive capabilities remain strong in the region, noting that Cyprus continues to be well protected. Additionally, another British vessel, RFA Lyme Bay, is undergoing upgrades with autonomous mine hunting systems in preparation for a possible deployment
