In November 2019, Nicola Bannon and Lynne Darcy were complete strangers to each other. However, over the course of six years, their lives became intertwined through their shared experience of abuse and their joint effort to bring their former history teacher, William Lloyd-Lavery, to justice. Alongside four other women, they took legal action accusing Lloyd-Lavery, who had worked at Richmond Lodge school in Belfast during the 1970s, of sexual abuse.
Nicola Bannon was the first to come forward, recounting the traumatic experience she endured at the hands of Lloyd-Lavery. She described feeling “hunted like prey” by a man driven by “his own sexual gratification.” During her testimony, she detailed how he lured her into a small stationery room under the guise of finding a book, where he grabbed her in a “vice-like grip.” She recounted the humiliation of having her skirt lifted and the distressing moment when he “put his hands inside my underwear.” Following her initial report to the police, Nicola reached out to other former pupils via a Facebook group, encouraging anyone who had suffered abuse to come forward. By the end of the day, six women, including Lynne Darcy, had contacted her, leading to the case that culminated in Lloyd-Lavery’s conviction.
Lynne Darcy, who has also waived her right to anonymity, shared her own account of abuse during the trial. She described an incident where Lloyd-Lavery invited her to discuss a history test but then assaulted her in the same stationery room. The words he uttered during the assault, “Do you mind me doing this?” left a lasting impression, symbolizing the betrayal of trust by a person in authority. She expressed the profound impact of that day, saying, “I lost my innocence that day because a person in authority overstepped the mark and lost all my trust.” Both women remarked on Lloyd-Lavery’s lack of remorse, with Lynne pointing out that he seemed to believe the accusations were part of a coordinated “Me Too” campaign, despite them being unknown to each other before taking legal action. The eventual guilty verdict was met with relief and joy by the survivors.
Despite the conviction, both Nicola and Lynne found it difficult to hear the character references presented in court before sentencing. David Campbell, a well-known figure with longstanding ties to Lloyd-Lavery, provided a reference expressing concern that a custodial sentence might have severe health consequences for Lloyd-Lavery. Campbell described his reference as “brief” and “factual,” emphasizing that his intention was not to exacerbate the victims’ suffering. However, both women found his remarks incredulous, with Lynne stating, “I would have thought any abuse or assault towards a child is a huge matter,” and Nicola questioning how Campbell could possibly understand the impact on the victims. When confronted with these reactions, Campbell reiterated that he rejected any suggestion that he was minimizing the abuse. Both Nicola Bannon and Lynne Darcy continue to encourage other victims to come forward, asserting the importance of lifting the burden of shame and anger and seeking justice
